Belgrade, known as Beograd in Serbian, was the capital of Yugoslavia until 1992 and is now the capital of Serbia.

Its name comes from the Serbian words "beo" meaning "white" and "grad" meaning "city", which together mean "white city".

It sits at the intersection of the Danube and Sava rivers, where the Balkans and Pannonia meet. As one of the oldest cities in Europe, Belgrade has a population of 2,233,796, making it the most populous metropolitan area in the former Yugoslavia and the third most populous in southeastern Europe, after Athens and Bucharest.

Belgrade has a continental climate, with hot summers, often above 40°C, and severe winters. The most pleasant weather is typically in May, June, September, and October.

During the day, Belgrade offers visitors its museums, art galleries, cafes, and shopping streets. At night, it becomes an eclectic stage for clubs and nightclubs, where the nightlife continues until dawn.
